2015 Healthy Meal Ideas.. Breakfasts

Breakfast is most definitely the most important meal of the day, especially if you've got a long wait until lunch time.

A good mix of different food groups is important in order to keep energy levels high and so you're ready to start the day. A cup of caffeine alone is unlikely to keep you going for long.

Oats with berries and nuts
Scrambled eggs on toast with salmon
Weetabix with bananas and almonds
Yoghurt with pineapple and chia seeds
Pancakes with raisins and greek yoghurt
If you're in a rush or grabbing lunch on the move, opt for porridge or a fruit and nut bar

It's also important to stay hydrated and keeping that metabolism high, so rather than a sugary drink, opt for a simple tea or bottled water - it can be flavoured if the sugar content is low!

Check back for lunch time tips..

A New Term, A New Way To Look At Food...

Are you looking at food as the enemy? Forever tempting, something you can't eat too much of, something you shouldn't add salt to and something to take over your life..

But does it need to be that way?

Maybe you just need to shift the way you think about what you are putting into your body..

And think about it as exactly that - what you are putting into your body.

Food ultimately, is fuel.
Food made up of calories, which gives you the energy to get through the day.

And that's what you should be eating, the right type of foods to get you through your day.

Yes, it's obviously better to eat non processed foods on the whole, but that doesn't mean to you have to cut them out completely. That'll just leave you craving.
Eating healthier of course doesn't mean food becomes boring and bland.
Scroll through this blog for example and you'll get a snippet of how amazingly healthy and delicious food can be.

Calories are not evil, Calories are units of your body's fuel.

Excessive calories come in the form of overly sugary pastries, cakes and biscuits. Although tasty, these foods may contain as many calories as a whole meal and not fill you up at all.

This of course doesn't stop you from eating said foods but the key is - everything in moderation!

Abandon the diet.
Start thinking of food as fuel rather than something to fear.
Something to get you through the day.
And something you need to survive.

Healthy Cocktail Recipes!

Cutting the calories doesn't mean you have to completely cut these tasty summery treats from your life!

Faux-jito:
For one serving, you’ll need: three or four mint leaves, a lime wedge, 1 oz. white rum, diet lemon-lime soda (such as Sprite Zero, Diet Sierra Mist, or Diet 7-Up), ice, and sugar (just for the rim of the glass!).
To prepare: Muddle mint leaves with white rum and the juice from lime wedge (1/8 of the lime). Muddling is done by lightly crushing the mint (just until the leaves bruise) using a mortar and pestle or whatever you have on hand. Just don't shred the mint!
Run the squeezed lime wedge around the rim of the glass, and then dip the top of the glass in a shallow plate of granulated sugar to coat the rim. Pour the muddled mixture into your glass, fill with crushed ice, and top off with the diet soda

Vodka Lemonade:
Using a juicer, blend one cucumber, two celery stalks, one head of romaine lettuce, one lemon, one small piece of fresh ginger, and two green apples. Then, add vodka to taste.

Raspberry Lemonade Martini:
To prepare: Mix one shot of vodka, one shot of Triple Sec (leave this out if you’re on a tighter calorie budget), and Tropicana Trop50 Raspberry Lemonade (to fill the martini glass). Shake it all with ice and pour it into a chilled martini glass. Add a twist of lemon and voila!

Cape Codder:
Pour 1 shot of vodka and 2 shots cranberry juice (100 percent juice, no sugar added) over ice. Add 2 shots seltzer water, stir, and garnish with a lime wedge.

Jack Sparrow:
In an 8-ounce glass with ice, combine 1 shot coconut rum and the juice of 1 lime. Fill the rest of the glass withginger ale (about ¾ cup). Garnish with a slice of lime.

Juicing Cleanse Recipes!

Juice cleansing has recently taken off in a big way.. but what actually is it?
It effectively involves replacing meals with raw, healthy juices containing all of your days nutrients for a short period of time.
Although your body removes toxins from your body naturally, a juicing programme for a couple of days can really help in replenishing and relaxing your body, as you obviously can't do too much heavy exercise.
Even if you don't fancy a juicing cleanse, these recipes are great if you're peckish between meals or if you need an extra energy boost.

Before cleansing, do remember to get professional health advice and make sure it's right for you :)

ULTIMATE GREEN JUICE

I drink this juice daily, and with good reason. The base is celery, which is a little known nutritional powerhouse. It’s loaded with potassium, folic acid, magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and essential amino acids. On top of all that, it’s one of the most alkalinizing things you can put in your body. To the celery, I add kale, green apple, parsley, lime, lemon and ginger, creating an extremely potent, detoxifying cocktail.

INGREDIENTS:

1 bunch celery
4-5 kale leaves (preferably lacinato)
1 green apple
one big handful of flat leaf parsley leaves
1 lime
1 lemon
1 inch of fresh ginger
*Add one tablespoon of Organic Coconut Oil 10 Juicing Recipes for Cleansing the Body of Toxins for additional health benefits.

BEET APPLE AND BLACKBERRY JUICE

Beet juice is a powerful cleanser of the blood, and highly nutritious. It’s full of folate, manganese potassium, iron and Vitamin C. To the beets, I add apples, blackberries and ginger, creating a deep red and delicious elixir.

WILD SPICED DANDELION BERRY BLISS JUICE

This Wild Spicy Dandelion Berry Bliss Juice is a fantastic example of how a pulped juice is not only healthier and more beneficial, it is actually more texturally pleasing.

2 cups strawberries
1 cup dandelion leaves or more to taste
1 cup raspberries
1 small chili with seeds and placental skin removed (more or less depending on the heat) *optional

TROPICAL PARADISE JUICE

The perfect way to brighten your morning, this juice blend is easy on the digestive system and gently loosens any build up that may have occurred while the body was at rest.

Juicy Fact
This juice was a chance discovery at a roadside juice stand on the beautiful island of Kauai. Although the juice stand is no longer in business, we are happy to share this recipe and keep this best-selling juice alive. It is simply incredible.

BLOSSOMING LOTUS JUICE AIDE

The simple ingredients in this fresh green juice create an exotic combination. This sweet, herbal drink is a wonderful departure from mundane juice blends.

Coconuts are packed with potassium and electrolytes, says Helms, which makes them great post-workout drinks, and ideal for summer.

Healthy Drinks to Get You Through the Day!

Feeling tired, sluggish or just down? There's a drink for that!

Weight Loss:
Looking for ways to burn that unwanted fat? Find yourself some cayenne pepper, says holistic nutritionist Tara Miller. Cayenne pepper can apparently speed up your metabolism by 25 per cent, according to 3FatChicks.com. Miller suggest mixing cayenne pepper with water, fresh lemons, a little sea salt and a bit of maple syrup for sweetness.
Liver Health:
For liver health, Miller recommends drinking beet juice. Beets have zero trans and saturated fats and are packed with magnesium, calcium and iron, according to Yahoo News.
Brain Health:
Flax oil is great for sharpening our brains, Miller says. She recommends mixing flax oil (packed with omega 3 fatty acids) with your favourite fruit smoothie — you won't even taste the difference.
Bone Health:
Think green! Miller says for bone health, opt for drinks that contain vitamin K — she suggests making the greenest juice of all: kale juice.
First Thing In The Morning:
Your first drink in the morning shouldn't be a cup of coffee. Miller says water with lemon cleanses our liver, stimulates bile and helps with digestion in our bodies.
Middle Of The Day:
When 4 p.m. hits, our bodies are usually ready to take a nap. For a much-needed energy boost, Miller says green tea will give you a tiny boost of caffeine, with a high amount of antioxidants.
Before You Sleep:
For those of you who usually have to deal with a long and tiring day, Miller recommends drinking a calming tea with chamomile or lavender to soothe your senses before snooze time.
Before Your Workout:
Miller says before you work out, think carbs. "Your drink should contain more carbohydrates than protein to deliver quick usable energy for your workout," she says. Dates and date juice is a good example of a high carb fruit that also lowers your blood pressure.
After Your Workout:
Here's a post-workout smoothie you can prepare in advance: Blend coconut water (good for hydration), hemp, frozen blueberries, frozen bananas and raw cocoa powder to get an instant boost of flavour and antioxidants, Miller says.
Cold Or Flu:
You won't need a lemon for this one. When you're stuck with a cold or sore throat, Miller recommends licorice tea (a plant related to the beans and pea family) to help soothe sore throats and eliminate mucus.
When You're Cold:
Can a warm cup of tea or hot chocolate actually keep you warm on a cold day? There is some truth to this, Miller says, adding that drinking a hot cup of tea with warming spices like chai makes the perfect heat source.
Hangovers:
Fun nights usually end in not-so-fun mornings. If you're trying to fight that hangover, Miller says drink a beverage with high amounts of electrolytes — like coconut water.
Cramps:
If you're dealing with cramps, one natural way to relieve the pain is by drinking beverages with high amounts of magnesium, Miller says. Try making your own homemade hot chocolate with raw cocoa powder, almond milk and honey or maple syrup for a sweet taste.
Pregnant:
For all the pregnant ladies, Miller recommends drinking something high in folic acid and omega 3. One study showed that women who get 0.4 milligrams of folic acid daily during early pregnancy reduced the risk that their baby will be born with aneural tube defect (incomplete development of the brain and spinal cord) by up to 70 per cent, according to KidsHealth.org. Millers suggests a power smoothie with raw cacao, frozen bananas, sugar free peanut butter, spinach (both have folic acid), almond milk and flax seed oil.
Eating Spicy Foods:
Sure, water can put out the fire, but so can dairy products. If you're trying to get rid of the burning sensation in your mouth after a spicy meal, try a mango lassi (an Indian-based yogurt drink) with coconut yogurt, and if you're vegan or lactose, try out coconut milk.
Vomiting:
If your daily commute feels like a roller coaster, Miller says you can calm your stomach and reduce nausea with ginger tea.
Allergic Reactions:
Seasonal allergies can be soothed with vitamin C and quercetin (a form of flavonol found in fruits and veggies). Miller says a cup of freshly squeezed OJ has both.
When You're Feeling Down:
When you mood is down, don't turn right to ice cream. Miller says drinking a beverage high in tryptophan (a type of amino acid) will help increase your "feel good" hormone serotonin. A quick fix includes a juice smoothie with frozen bananas, pineapples and kiwi.
Constipation:
Also known as the "Champagne of Life," kombucha tea is full of probiotics, improve digestion and helps keep your bathroom visits regular, Miller says.
Before Sex:
You won't need any chocolate or strawberries for this one. Miller says maca tea with honey (a natural aphrodisiac) can do the trick. Maca can increase our sex drives and honey is known to increase testosterone.
Preventing A UTI:
To help prevent a UTI, Miller recommends drinking pure cranberry juice. One study found that cranberry juice works against infections and bacteria within 8 hours of consumption, according to WebMD.com.
Instant Energy
Feel like a cheerleader without the poms poms and mini skirt. For an instant energy boost, try wheat grass juice.
Indigestion:
Upset stomach? Try a soothing drink like apple cider vinegar, Miller says. Mixing it with water is a good idea — as is checking with your doctor to make sure this remedy is right for you.

Top 10 Healthy Habits

1. Evaluate your eating habits. Are you eating late at night, nibbling while cooking, finishing the kids' meals? Take a look around, and it will be easy to identify a few behaviors you can change that will add up to big calorie savings.
2. If you fail to plan, plan to fail. You need a strategy for your meals and snacks. Pack healthful snacks for the times of day that you know you are typically hungry and can easily stray from your eating plan.
3. Always shop with a full belly. It's a recipe for disaster to go into the grocery store when you are hungry. Shop from a prepared list so impulse buying is kept to a minimum. Eating right starts with stocking healthy food in your pantry and refrigerator.
4. Eat regular meals. Figure out the frequency of your meals that works best in your life and stick to it. Regular meals help prevent bingeing.
5. Eat your food sitting down at a table, and from a plate. Food eaten out of packages and while standing is forgettable. You can wind up eating lots more than if you sit down and consciously enjoy your meals.
6. Serve food onto individual plates, and leave the extras back at the stove.Bowls of food on the table beg to be eaten, and it takes incredible will power not to dig in for seconds. Remember, it takes about 20 minutes for your mind to get the signal from your belly that you are full.
7. Eat slowly, chew every bite, and savor the taste of the food. Try resting your fork between bites and drinking plenty of water with your meals.
8. Don't eat after dinner. This is where lots of folks pack on the extra pounds. If you are hungry, try satisfying your urge with a non-caloric beverage or a piece of hard candy. Brushing your teeth after dinner helps reduce the temptation to eat again.
9. If you snack during the day, treat the snack like a mini-meal. The most nutritious snacks contain complex carbohydrates and a small amount of protein and fat.
10. Start your day with breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day. After a long night's rest, your body needs the fuel to get your metabolism going and give you energy for the rest of the day.

Nutritional yeast has a rep as a weird hippie ingredient (you can find it at organic/health food stores or order online) but it's absolutely worth keeping around. It has a great umami flavor that's very cheese-esque, lots of protein and fiber, and zero fatty cheese-induced guilt.
